Subject: Appeal for avoiding mention of Religion and Caste in news headlines & reports for improved cohesion in society

Dear Sir/Madam

We are writing this letter on behalf of “The People’s Voice Society” which aims at instilling human & social values and helping to raise the level of public awareness on issues related to citizens’ rights and obligations. Our vision is to see India as a developed economy, peaceful and progressive, with an educated young, healthy and vibrant society. The People’s Voice Society is committed to being active as an instrument of positive and progressive change in the social fabric of Indian society.

We believe that unfortunately there is widespread reporting of news with a religious or caste based perspective with bold headlines, vastly flashed in a major section of the countrywide newspapers and magazines which is facilitating and developing discord. We wish to make a stringent appeal to all journalists / editors / news writers of media houses across the country to stop mentioning religion / caste etc. in headlines of articles (both print and digital), especially those capable of provoking sharp reactions from sections of society and causing communal upheaval. Only if it is absolutely essential to mention these details, only then should it be so mentioned in the article. We believe very strongly if you will stop highlighting the caste/ religion of the news subjects in the headlines, it will certainly have positive impact in our society which is now divided. The main objective of the organization is that all of us should come out of the poison that has spread in people related to man-made straitjackets like caste and religion. Only then can we become a civilized, positive & energetic society.

It has become very depressing to even open the newspapers these days as the headline of majority of articles starts with Caste, Religion or such other dividing factors of the society. A crime under the law is a crime, irrespective of the religion or caste of the offender, which has nothing to do with the crime. Even if the crime is committed due to religion, it is still an offense under the Indian Penal Code.

At the end of the day, human beings have always been serving human beings; this after all is our moral responsibility. This is how society operates.

Kind Regards

Sub: Regarding article in Ahmedabad TOI about woman being forced to follow husband’s religion

Dear Sir

I am writing on behalf of The People’s Voice Society, a decade old non-profit, with an objective of instilling human values, raising levels of public awareness on all issues especially social, concerning every citizen of their rights and obligations. Our vision is to see India as a developed economy, with an educated young, healthy and vibrant society, devoid of class divisions, peaceful and progressive.

On 4th September 2020, there was a rather disturbing report in the Ahmedabad Times of India about a 26-year-old woman of a certain religion who had married a man of another religion in court on 23 February 2017 (Ahmedabad: Wife accuses man of forcing her to follow his religion- TNN) .

As per the report, when they got married, they both agreed that neither would interfere in each other’s religion and both spouses would be free to follow their own respective religions. But only a year later in 2018, despite having a child together, the man began forcing his wife to observe customs according to his religion. Being constantly being pressured, the woman has filed a complaint against her husband and is seeking justice.

News items of this ilk unfortunately keep trickling in. The People’s Voice Society does however have a suggestive in this regard. Couples should be allowed to get married without the law of the land dictating any conversation to take place for legalizing the marriage. It should be an individual decision, and married couples should be free to live together without either having to change their religion. Religion should not become an obstacle and it is high time we leave behind this kind of regressive thinking which has always hindered our society. Our people need  to slowly come out of this type of thinking, only then this country will move forward. After all, our roots are all the same.

If any contact details of the couple mentioned in the article are available, our Society is eager to help them in all possible ways, so that this matter can be resolved, and the life of their child is not spoiled.

We now wish to brief you a bit further about our Society and its work.

The People’s Voice Society has been working in different areas of society for 10 years. For the last 5 years, we have been working tirelessly to bring various groups of people together who have hitherto been divided, especially on the basis of caste, creed and religion.

One of the issues we have most actively been working on is the sensitive subject of inter-caste, inter regional and inter faith marriages. The organization is working fully towards spreading its message to every state of the country. The main objective of the organization is to thread the entire Indian population into one garland. All the beads of the garland will be different but the thread will be the same.

Every citizen of the country is divided by caste, creed, region and religion, but the Coronavirus pandemic has reminded all of us that we are all human beings. We hope you feel the urge to support us in this noble cause and fulfill your humane responsibility if you feel it is the right thing to do.

We also want to bring your attention to an Act which came about 65 years ago which unfortunately only a few people are aware about. An act for inter-caste marriage came under the ‘Protection of Civil Rights Act 1955’ passed by the Government of India. Despite it being around 65 years since its inception, there is very little awareness among the general public about its provisions. Our organization urges that this Act be promoted to help spread awareness in different states, so that people can get maximum benefit of this Act. The main message being put out by our Society is that there should be promotion of inter-caste marriages, which the Act says, but above and beyond this, there should be encouragement of inter-faith and inter-regional marriages as well.

We request you to please spread this message to maximum people through your newspaper, web portal or any other medium. We are highly grateful to you for taking the time to read this letter. We humbly request you to please acknowledge the receipt of the same.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards

Why to change name and religion ? why the need for caste and religion based statistics ? why a law for conversion by Government?

Rising above narrow paradigms like caste, creed and religion, The People’s Voice Society strives to work for upliftment of humanity. These aforementioned man made definitions have only enabled the division of society into fragments, the consequences of which can be seen manifesting themselves from time to time in explosions of violence and hatred.

The main objective of The People’s Voice Society is to promote inter caste and inter religious marriages in the country. Indeed, The Protection of Civil Rights Act of 1955 passed by the Government of India itself states the need and importance of inter caste marriages, but unfortunately very few people in the country are even aware of this important piece of legislation.

Our organisation, however, feels it is very important that the general public are made aware of this Act, and the government of the day puts in more efforts to broadcast its salient features on a wider basis. It is very important for our national unity that inter caste and inter religious marriages are promoted and encouraged.

Segueing onto a slightly different tangent, we feel that in order to be a truly secular society, it is of utmost importance to delink one’s name from religion. If a person following a particular religion decides on any given day to start following a different religion, he or she should not be forced to legally change their name or religion.

The People’s Voice Society believes that there is no need for any law on converting one’s religion. Deciding what faith or belief system to follow should be one’s personal choice and they should be free to make their own choice without the government or the law of the land having a role to play in it.

Indeed, it has been seen in many cases that when someone changes their religion, more questions are raised and discussions held on the person in question changing their name. Is this even necessary? If a man and woman of different faiths decide to get married, they are more than capable of leading a blissful married life without either of them having to convert their religion. Both should be free to keep following their respective religions without the law mandating that either one of them converts. Each should be free to visit a temple, mosque, gurudwara or church as per their existing beliefs, and should be allowed to keep their names which have been their identity their entire lives. Marriage is a holy union, in which religion should not be a factor.

We have all been given a fairly simple life to live, however it is we ourselves who try to put obstacles in our path every step of the way. There are already many serious issues plaguing mankind, the fact that religion has also been added to this list is indeed very disappointing and unnecessary. Our organisation finds it very disturbing when we read in the newspaper or listen to some news broadcast about a person having to change their religion. Is this an indicator of a progressive nation? This is the question we all have to ponder over.

Even the census data the government prepares listing the number of people in the country by their religion, caste etc. is intrinsically flawed. What is the real purpose of this information? This type of data only serves vote bank politics of various political parties. There is absolutely no need for data to be published from such a communal perspective as it only serves to remind people of how they are ‘different’ from others and causes further divisions in society.

Ultimately, we wish to reinforce the message that every citizen should be free to marry the person of their choosing without casteist or religious considerations, and should not be mandatorily forced to change their religion in order to get married. Changing one’s name on a piece of paper just to please other people is not something that should happen in a secular and progressive country.

In a democracy, we all have the freedom of choice. One may, for example, like the colour red. However others may like blue, green, yellow or any other colour. Everyone is free to like the colour of their choosing. This is important because every colour is unique and has its own attributes and qualities; if there was only one colour for everyone to like, then there would be no diversity. This metaphor can be applied to freedom of marriages as well.

From time to time, we hear of uplifting stories in the news which make us feel there is hope after all. Recently, in Jind district of Haryana, there was a story of how a Khap Panchayat decided that marriages would take place without the couple having to use their gotra and would instead use the name of their village instead. This is a big departure from the past, especially since it is a Khap Panchayat, traditionally associated with a regressive mindset and diktats, that is bringing about this change which in itself is a hugely welcome change.

Then there is the story of Sneha from the Vellore district of Tamil Nadu who fought a long and hard battle to obtain a certificate from the government stating her name to be simply Sneha, as she did not want her name to be associated with any caste or religion as she did not believe in these man made systems. So strong were her beliefs, that throughout her academic life, she never filled her ‘caste’ or ‘religion’ in any forms in school or college.

There are many such inspirational and enlightened people among us, who are working towards ridding our nation of divisive barriers arising out of differences in religion and caste. We, at The People’s Voice Society, stand side by side with such individuals and support them at every turn. We are also working tirelessly to spread awareness on such issues across the country and help bring about true national unity. Our vision is to one day see India as a developed economy, with an educated young, healthy and vibrant society, devoid of class divisions, peaceful and progressive. We urge all our readers to join us in our movement and support us in any way possible which would help us in realising our dream of a united India.

Dr. Ambedkar Scheme for Social Integration through Inter-Caste Marriages

Introduction

Traditionally, marriage in Hindu society was a sacrament but after the passage of Hindu Marriage Act 1955 it can be treated as a contract. However, still marriages primarily take place on the traditional grounds of Jatis (caste) and up-jati (sub-caste). That means marriage is inextricably linked to Jati Vyavastha (caste system) with its roots in the religion.

Inter-caste marriages can be one of the significant steps to reduce the caste-prejudices, abolish ‘untouchability’ and spread the values of liberty, equality, fraternity etc in the society.

Main Objective of Scheme

The objective of the scheme is to appreciate the socially bold step, of an Inter-caste marriage, taken by the newly married couple and to extend financial incentive to the couple to enable them to settle down in the initial phase of their married life. It is clarified that it should not be construed as a supplementary scheme to an employment generation or poverty alleviation scheme.

Eligibility

  • An Inter-caste marriage, for the purpose of this Scheme means a marriage in which one of the spouses belongs to Scheduled Caste and the other belongs to a Non-Scheduled Caste.
  • The marriage should be valid as per the law and duly registered under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. An affidavit of their being legally married and in matrimonial alliance would be submitted by the couple.
  • No incentive is available on second or subsequent marriage.
  • Proposal would be treated as valid if submitted within one year of marriage.
  • It shall be the discretion of the Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment & Chairman of Dr. Ambedkar Foundation to sanction the incentive to the Couple.
  • Submission of false/ fabricated information to the competent authority would be punishable as per law in force.

Extent of Incentive

  • The incentive for a legal inter-caste marriage shall be Rs.2.50 lakh per marriage. On receipt of a Pre-stamped receipt on Rs 10 Non-Judicial Stamp paper. the eligible couples would receive 1.50 lakh of the incentive amount though RTGS / NEFT to the joint bank account. The balance would be kept as Fixed Deposit for three years.
  • The Scheme would provide incentive to 500 such marriages in one year. Physical target for each state is fixed in proportion to the percentage share of SC population, as per Census 2011.
  • The Scheme, to begin with was implemented on a pilot basis for a period of 2 years i.e. 2013-14 and 2014-15. The Scheme was then continued as a regular scheme from April 2015. powerment which is already under implementation and its revised version is also envisaged to be as one of the sub-component of the proposed Umbrella Scheme for Development of Scheduled Castes (Centrally Sponsored Scheme).
  • An amount of Rs. 25,000/-, for each marriage, would be released to the District Authorities for organising a befitting programme in which the incentive would be handed over to the couple.

Shocked by Daughter’s Inter-caste Love Marriage, Three of Maharashtra Family Commit Suicide – We should all support interctate marriage to change the Society’s mindset towards such alliances which will eventually help in making India cohesive Society.

IANS Updated:February 11, 2020, 9:39 PM IST

Shocked by Daughter’s Inter-caste Love Marriage, Three of Maharashtra Family Commit Suicide.

While the girl, a schoolteacher, belongs to an OBC caste, the boy belongs to a Scheduled Caste working for a private company.

The newly-wedded couple has been admitted to a local hospital for treatment. Their condition is reported to be stable, she said.

It all started on Saturday when the girl — Pranali Wargantivar (24) — suddenly left home without informing anybody and went straight to Markanda village in the district and got married to her beau at a local Shiv Temple on Sunday.

While the girl, a schoolteacher, belongs to an OBC caste, the boy belongs to a Scheduled Caste working for a private company. The girl’s family was strongly opposed to the ‘inter-caste’ alliance.

When the Wargantivar family — Ravindra (52), Vaishali (45) and their son Sairam (20) — learnt of Pranali’s marriage on Monday, they first stopped eating, then left their home to go for a stroll. Around a kilometre away, they came across a farm-well and jumped into it and ended their lives.

Prior to committing suicide, they informed the owner of their rented house of their intentions and disconnected the phone before he could attempt to dissuade them from taking the extreme step.

Earlier, the Wargantivars attempted to lodge a police complaint against their proposed inter-caste marriage, but both the boy and girl were adults, so no cognizance was taken.

Their bodies were recovered on Monday afternoon.

As the shocking news of the triple suicide reached the just-married couple, they consumed some chemicals and jumped into the Pohar River near Markanda in Chamorshi sub-district, but were saved in the nick of time by a police team.
